First Night Boston

A 40+ year tradition, Boston’s First Night has been a cherished and signature event for our city. It has been a successful New Year’s Eve celebration of artistic performances, memories made and the beginning of a new year. In keeping with this fun-filled Boston tradition, the First Night celebration in 2017 will continue to be free and open to all. Entertainment and special attractions will be focused in Copley Square, and the Boston Common.

Many of the beloved traditions of First Nights past will be retained, including the People’s Procession at 6:00PM, intricate ice sculptures, twinkle light displays and Fireworks; including Boston’s Family Fireworks over the common at 7:00 PM produced by The Mugar Foundation. Different this year, there will be a "Countdown to Copley", a pyrotechnics and light show in Copley Square at Midnight. In addition, arts and musical performances will take place in numerous inside and outside venues around the heart of the event from noon to midnight.

Wedding Wednesdays: Four Alternative Ways to Announce Your Engagement

'Tis the season for rings and bling bling! Between Christmas and New Years, you'll definitely see a number of proposals and engagement photos on Facebook and Instagram. It's the most wonderful time of the year, am I right? But social media isn't the only way to share the news. Spread some holiday cheer by checking out these four alternative ways to announce your engagement!

1. Deliver the News in Person
Before word starts to spread—and it will—gather your family and closest friends to share the news. Nothing beats hearing the story in person, but if distance makes that next to impossible, pick up the phone, FaceTime or Skype. They'll want to see the ring!

2. Send a Video
If your fiancé hired a videographer to capture the proposal, share the highlight reel by email or group text. Even a boomerang of your new ring will give this kind of announcement some sparkle. Don't wait to celebrate!

3. Mail an Invitation
Celebrate in style with a party! People may have already heard the news, so make it official with an engagement party invite. Get the champagne and tissues ready—it'll be an emotional one!

4. Get It Published
Go the old-fashioned route and submit your story to the local paper. Your parents and grandparents will be delighted, and you’ll have a keepsake for your scrapbook or wedding album!

Celebrate with Good Music on NYE

Bars across Boston host NYE festivities each year. Parties range from raves to black tie affairs (depending on how much you want to spend). One thing you'll find in common at each, that gets the party started and keeps it going well into the New Year, is the music. From slow jams to 90's tribute bands, we're bringing you some of the best bars with live music to celebrate at this NYE!

Brighton Music Hall: Saved By the 90's

Tell me what you want, what you really, really want. 90's music, of course! We may be 17 years removed from the decade of Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys, but any excuse is a good excuse to party all night with a 90's tribute band at Brighton Music Hall. Yes, Backstreets back, alright!

Great Scott: GosT

For those with a gothic edge, darkwave synth project GosT will be at Great Scott starting a dance party of a different kind.

Middle East: Timberfakes

Downstairs at the Middle East, the music of Justin Timberlake will soundtrack the night, but JT won’t actually be performing. Instead, tribute band The Timberfakes will be there to rock your body ‘til the break of day.

Lilypad: Some Like It Hott

Lilypad in Inman Square will transform into a futuristic discotheque for the night, featuring four different DJ sets and a performance from local ambient duo Sunshine City.

Regattabar: Dwight and Nicole

Bluesy duo Dwight and Nicole will deliver its hard-driving vocals and soulful energy to the Cambridge jazz club Regattabar.

Get in the mood to groove and devour the details of these and more venues in the Boston area to celebrate with good music this NYE!

Wedding Wednesdays: When One Moment Inspires Your Whole Wedding

ICYMI, Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario (aka Spencer), married Suits actor Patrick J. Adams over the weekend. And though it was a wildly gorgeous wedding (from the photos we were able to see) we wondered where that inspiration came from. Especially the hashtag the couple chose--#FortDay. Turns out, the theme was created from one single memory, the backbone of their whole relationship. A moment they wanted to share with their closest families and friends in the most beautiful way. Here's the story:
The Instagram post reads:
"8 years ago we were two friends who has shared very little time together. We were tired and overworked and just wanted to have some peace and quiet. So he invited me over to his apartment where he had built us a pillow fort. He stapled sheets and Christmas lights to the ceiling. We shut the door to the world outside. We didn't answer our phones. And over pancakes and movies. Long late night conversations and sleep. we got to know each other a little better. That was the first "Fort Day". Each year after that our fort got a little bigger until 3 years ago our fort was a brand new home. Our first that we bought together. And in the still and the quiet of that "fort day" he asked me to marry him. Well this year it wasn't about peace and quiet. Two days ago we decided to make the biggest fort we could dream of and we asked all our friends and family to come in it. Tents and talent shows. Food trucks and fires. Kids screamed "I Iove fort day!" before jumping into the pool. I can't believe something small between friends could be accepted and embraced by so many people that mean so much to us. And what that said To me was that any of the tough times we've had making 8 years of long distance work was worth it. The pining. The missing. The quiet nights alone believing that it would be worth it. We were right to believe in us. And not only did we believe @halfadams but everyone around us did too. #fortday2016 (thank you to the amazing @dreamsequences for this awesome photo)"
It is truly amazing how this one pivotal moment shaped their whole wedding celebration. The outdoor venue housed a number of tents for guests to camp in all weekend long. Vows were exchanged in front of two old oak trees. A rustic feel with vintage charm. Close family and friends referred to the night they tied the knot as "magical" and "enchanted". You get the idea!
Image result for troian bellisario wedding
The stunning bride walked down the aisle in a white Cortana gown with sheer sleeves and a headpiece by Amaroq. And her prince of a groom wore a navy blue three-piece Ralph Lauren suit! Picture perfect.
We hope that as you begin planning your wedding, you'll reflect on some of your favorite memories for inspiration. As you can tell from Troian and Patrick's story, there is nothing more beautiful than incorporating that pivotal moment into the first day of the rest of your lives together. Get inspired and devour the details of your very own magical and enchanted wedding!

Christmas Breakfast by the Kitchy Kitchen

We're all about traditions this holiday season and having breakfast together on Christmas Day is definitely one of them! Nothing too extraordinary because we like to save room for dinner of course but it's nice to share in a morning treat after opening gifts. So here's a recipe that screams tradition with its staple ingredient. You guessed it! Good ol' eggnog; a rich, chilled, sweetened, creamy dairy-based beverage that you will find in homes across the country throughout the month of December. And thanks to the Kitchy Kitchen, you can now enjoy this seasonal treat... in doughnut form!

Eggnog donut recipe for the holidays:

That's right, eggnog doughnuts! This recipe is based off of a vintage milk Vermont-style doughnut. No matter when you decide to make them, these treats are sure not to disappoint!

For the donuts
  • 2 cups of flour
  • ¾ teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • ½ cup buttermilk
For topping
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
1. Sift dry ingredients together. Add wet ingredients and stir until a rough dough forms. Sprinkle your counter with flour and knead together the dough, just until it forms a smooth ball. Roll with a rolling pin to about ½ an inch thick and cut with a doughnut cookie cutter.

2. Heat up 4 inches of vegetable oil (traditionally lard) to 375F. Add the doughnuts, in batches so they have plenty of room, and cook for about 3 minutes, or until a deep golden brown, and flip, cooking for another 3 minutes. Immediately toss into cinnamon sugar mixture to coat. Enjoy warm.

The perfect donut recipe for the holiday season

We hope this is something you can incorporate into Christmas morning from this year forward! Devour the details of tradition and enjoy these eggnog doughnuts with your family. Happy holidays!

A New Place to Rock this NYE

Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve came to be in 1973 and has become a long standing tradition across the country. It is an annual television special that airs every New Year's Eve on ABC. The special broadcasts from New York City's Times Square, and prominently features coverage of its annual ball drop event, along with live and pre-recorded musical performances by popular musicians from Times Square and from Hollywood while folks at home countdown the New Year. This event has become ingrained in pop culture and after 43 years we would expect nothing more than for the special to grow.

What's that now? Grow? You mean expanding further around Times Square? Nope. We're talking adding a whole new city and state to the mix. Surprise! New Orleans will help ring in 2017 for the first time as Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest expands its coverage into the Central Time Zone. That's right, the Big Easy is ready to take on this tradition (even though they're just a few months away from Mardi Gras)! The live segments from Louisiana will include exclusive performances from the Allstate Fan Fest and interviews leading up to the big countdown.

This year’s telecast will feature performances from Mariah Carey, DNCE, Thomas Rhett and Gloria Estefan and the cast of her Broadway musical On Your Feet! Viewers can expect continuous updates from Jenny McCarthy as she reports live from Times Square and the Billboard Hollywood Party will be hosted by Fergie with additional performers to be announced shortly.

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve will begin broadcasting live at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, December 31, on ABC. It's amazing to see this event grow over time. This year's celebration definitely calls for beignets and beads so be sure to include those on your NYE party shopping list! We can't wait to see New Orleans devour the details of ringing in 2017!

Monday Mashups: Yvonne's Group Cocktails

Happy Monday Mashup! We know you had those Sunday Scaries last night but we're here to tell you there's only 5 work days standing between you and the weekend. No plans yet? Don't worry, we got you (and three others) covered!

Head in to town for a night at Yvonne’s, a modern reinterpretation of the 'supper club'. This is a place that effortlessly flows from dinner and drinks to lounging and revelry, where every visit offers an ever-evolving experience that lets the night take the lead. Sounds pretty underground to us. With it comes an entirely new social experience blending cosmopolitan cuisine with high-touch service in impossibly chic surroundings.

A staple of Boston’s dining scene for more than a century, Locke-Ober opened its doors in 1862 as a small cellar cafĂ© run by Luis Ober. For years, Ober oversaw the Winter Place address and, with the help of a wealthy investor, renovated the space into the structure that still stands today. The landmark restaurant was known for its elite clientele, paramount discretion, globe-trotting food and wild parties – all of which are still elements Yvonne’s maintains today. We're not terribly sure why there would need to be paramount discretion in this setting but we're interested in giving it a whirl. Especially because of the real reason we want you to go; for the drinks!

Yvonne’s offers large-batch cocktails that are suited to group gatherings. Yes you read that right. Picture a scorpion bowl or those fish bowl drinks but better! The specialty menu includes cocktails such as the Moscow Mule and the Long Thailand Iced Tea with a blend of rums, sweet Thai iced tea, coconut, and tapioca pearls; the regular drink menu includes recent additions such as the Pumpkin Spiced Mule with vodka, pumpkin spice, ginger, lime, and soda; and the Penicillin with blended scotch whiskey, lemon, ginger, honey, and an Islay malt float on top. Did we mention each large-batch cocktail serves 4 people? Now you're catching our drift! Groups of 20 to full buyouts of 250 can be accommodated, and each large-batch cocktail is priced at $95. Amazing!
