Monday Mashups: Don't Be a Billy

Music festival season is nearly upon us. Tickets to major festivals are now on sale with lineups being announced and vendor contracts becoming finalized. Though booking the perfect act and crafting unique experiences can help attract attendees, careful risk management planning is key in driving a successful event. Event promoters of all experience levels—whether running first-time, local events, or weeklong music extravaganzas—can run into difficult, unexpected issues that can lead to crises. BizBash shares how promoters can help prevent live events from going viral for the wrong reasons by employing these four risk management tactics so you don't end up like Fyre Festival creator Billy McFarland. Check it out!

Risk management for music festivals should begin well before the event and can address everything from inadequate lighting to drug and alcohol use.

1. Include a risk manager in the planning process.
Risks for live music events can come from anywhere; everything from inadequate lighting to drug and alcohol use can cause problems at a festival. Risk managers have two priorities: keep guests safe and keep event producers out of litigation. In addition to being part of the planning process, risk managers should be on site well before guests arrive to check the venue for potential issues to take preventative action. The risk manager should also be in touch with key safety players before and during the event, including the local police and fire departments, as well as your medical team. A thorough risk check can help prevent accidents from happening and ultimately reduce the chance of lawsuits.

2. Identify the authority having jurisdiction.
This is the organization or office responsible for holding your event to code. Since the standards to which you can be held accountable may vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, it’s important to identify and communicate with the applicable local authority. Hiring a risk manager with strong familiarity with your event’s authority will be helpful in mitigating these types of scenarios.

3. Create a solid emergency action plan.
Festival patrons have an expectation of safety when attending your event. It’s your obligation to identify those emergencies that are reasonably foreseeable and develop appropriate response procedures. While there are essential elements common to all emergency action plans, each festival’s plan should be crafted for that specific event to ensure it addresses all local jurisdictional requirements. The development of the emergency action plan should be a collaborative effort between the event promoter and the risk manager to ensure all responsibilities are properly delegated and clearly understood. Once completed, implement formal, documented procedures to communicate the plan with staff, vendors, security, and anyone else working to make the event happen. Event promoters should use every available way to communicate with patrons in case of an emergency, which may include an on-site PA system, video screens, social media, or a custom event app.

4. Prepare your medical team.
Promoters should thoroughly prepare their team to handle ill or injured attendees. Hire a trusted medical director to lead the team and make sure that this person is in constant communication with both your risk manager and your security director. The placement of medical tents is crucial. Attendees should be able to easily identify and access medical staff at various locations within your venue. Make sure that your team includes mental health professionals, since incapacitated patrons may need psychological assistance. Another idea for event planners is to use teams of roving medical staff members to proactively identify individuals who may be in need of medical assistance.

Wedding Wednesdays: What To Know About Trunk Shows

According to The Knot, attending a local trunk show of one of your favorite wedding dress designers typically maximizes your chances of finding a dress you love. But if the thought of actually going feels daunting, they're here to answer your questions, calm your anxieties and help you navigate them like a pro. Here's the trunk show down low!

Image result for bridal gown trunk shows

What is a trunk show?
A wedding dress trunk show is a special event at which a wedding dress designer, or one of their reps or stylists, visits a bridal boutique on a set day with their entire line of new wedding dresses. To-be-weds then schedule appointments at the salon during the event to peruse the collection, try on dresses and meet with the designer.

When and where are they held?
Call local bridal boutiques and department store bridal salons to see when and if there are trunk shows scheduled, and with which designers. Most salons will also share trunk show information on their websites or social media pages. Trunk shows are planned well in advance, so stores should be able to give you a list of dates and designers. The shows last anywhere from one to a few days, and appointments fill up quickly—so book an appointment early.

How is a trunk show different from shopping at a bridal salon?
Most bridal salons only carry a limited selection of wedding gowns from a select group of designers. Trunk shows give you a chance to try on a wide range of dresses from a specific designer that may not all normally be in that particular store. If you’ve been eyeing a certain designer, this is the best way to see their work in person, try on different styles and seal the deal on your favorite. Even if you walk out empty handed, you’ll get a better sense of whether or not that’s the designer for you—sometimes things look different on Instagram or in a magazine than they do on your body, which is always good to know.

What are some of the perks of a trunk show?
You, the shopper, will benefit because you’ll get to talk to the actual designer about the gowns and any changes you may want to make to one you’re eyeing. Designers benefit from holding shows because they get to watch brides try on their gowns and listen to their comments. It's a great opportunity for them to learn directly from the consumer. The bridal salon benefits because it gets to show—and possibly sell—dresses that aren't part of its regular stock. And sometimes, discounts are offered if a dress is bought during the duration of the trunk show.

What’s the difference between a trunk show and a sample sale?
A sample sale is when a bridal salon sells the dresses already at the store to brides at a deep discount. These dresses are called samples because they’re the ones brides try on in store before ordering a new version with their specific alterations and/or embellishments.

A trunk show isn’t technically a sale at all since the dresses are not marked as discounted. But, most trunk shows do offer a discount for placing your order on the spot (sometimes up to 20 percent), so don't be shy about asking. Even if the salon doesn't offer a discount, the designer may throw in a few extras (a veil, buttons down the back, additional length on the sleeves or train) without charging you more. These might seem like small savings at the time, but they could make a big difference if you're working with a tight budget (extras definitely add up!).

Tasty Tuesday: The Greatest Guac of All Time

Tasty Tuesday...Taco Tuesday...to us, these go hand-in-hand. And since it's on the menu tonight, we'd figure we'd share a recipe for the G.G.O.A.T (Greatest Guac of All Time). Grab your avocados and get ready to dip all the chips. Enjoy!

This guacamole recipe is simple to make and uses fresh, high quality ingredients. It's easy, authentic and delicious!

Ingredients
3 avocados (ripe)
1/2 small onion, finely diced
2 Roma tomatoes, diced
3 tbsp, fresh cilantro, chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed and finely diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 lime, juiced
1/2 tsp sea salt

Directions
Slice the avocados in half, remove the pit and skin and place in a mixing bowl. Mash the avocado with a fork and make it as chunky or smooth as you’d like.
Add the remaining ingredients and stir together.

Here’s how to keep guacamole green:
Place your leftover guacamole in a storage container and pat it down with a spoon so it’s nice and flat on top.
Add about 1/2 inch of water on top (we used cold water).
Place the lid on the storage container and store it in the fridge. That’s it!
When you want to enjoy the guacamole, drain the water off the top, give it a stir and you’re good to go.

This guacamole recipe is simple to make and uses fresh, high quality ingredients. It's easy, authentic and delicious!

We can't wait for dinner tonight and hope you're just as excited to devour the details of this recipe as we are!

Monday Mashups: Co-Work from the Comforts of Your Hotel

The hotel lobby is no longer just for checking in. BizBash shares that today’s travelers are happily turning hotel public spaces into their offices, bypassing the lonely and often inconvenient hotel business center. Hotels are responding by setting up hubs for co-working, where guests can connect to Wi-Fi, plug in their laptops, and get work done in an inviting atmosphere—alongside tourists, locals, and business travelers alike.

<p> Harbor Court San Francisco</p>

These hotel co-working spaces are a response to new attitudes about working. Besides providing the millennial business crowd with the vibrant, creative atmosphere and communal experience they expect, co-working areas provide an in-between space that’s less formal than traditional meeting rooms. For some, adding a dedicated co-working space in a hotel can open up a new revenue stream while engaging the surrounding neighborhood. Here’s how hotels are embracing the trend.

Lobbies As Living Rooms
Harbor Court San Francisco unveiled a $10 million renovation this summer that transformed its lobby into a co-working space with a communal work table, comfortable sofas, glass-enclosed meeting rooms, and a café serving up lattes and other treats. The redesigned space has been popular with locals too: Entrepreneurs book the lobby’s meeting rooms and neighbors stop by for a coffee.

In Los Angeles, Montrose West Hollywood wants to capture a similar buzz in its new co-working space called Tone Lounge, part of a $15 million remodel that wrapped up this summer. Networking guests can rent headphones, use a printer, and then wrap up a workday with the lounge’s Vino & Vinyl happy hour.

On the East Coast, the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner’s atrium lobby is a place for impromptu breakout sessions, and the hotel’s six-year-old Technology Lounge is an offshoot of the lobby, with cozy seating options and LG technology like television panels and wall monitors.

What Locals Want
The first official 24/7 co-working space to debut in Vail is located within the new DoubleTree by Hilton Vail, which opened in March. Hilton partnered with co-working management company Proximity to provide business travelers and Colorado entrepreneurs alike with user-friendly workspaces, conference rooms, and free coffee. Local co-working members of the Pivot62 space also get discounts on the hotel’s restaurant and bar, along with validated parking.

Getting access to a hotel’s amenities can be a big draw for entrepreneurs. In Washington, D.C., the new 209-room Eaton DC hotel opened its 370-member co-working space Eaton House in November. The complex boasts an open-desk area, private offices, and conference rooms. It also offers outlets for members to blow off steam, like a rooftop bar, spa, theater, and even a radio station. Looking at hotels globally, in Dubai, Nest, the co-working space within the Tryp by Wyndham Dubai, sells membership packages that include access to the property’s pool and gym.

Co-Working to Co-Living
On the flip side, dedicated co-working companies are getting into the hotel game. In April, New York’s the Assemblage opened John Street House, its second location, which also includes a 79-room hotel for long- and short-term stays.

<p> Assemblage John Street</p>

For small meetings or getting business done on the road, these spaces go beyond the typical hotel business center. It's a no brainer as to why we're seeing more and more of these in the industry. Consider co-working on your next trip and devour the details of a stay at one of these on trend homesteads.

Wine Down Friday or Friday Night Flights: What Will You Choose?

Need some ideas for an evening out with your Valentine? Look no further! We've got two awesome events that will perfectly pair with your other half. Check it out!

Wine Down Fridays
Every Friday from 4-7PM, First Crush winemakers come to the Massachusetts Wine Shop to share complimentary samples of their wines with you! All featured wines are 10% off, so you can sip and then shop. Come try something delicious and meet the people behind the wine! We remember our First Crush...and you will too after sipping some tomorrow night during this Wine Down Friday event!

The vision and the passion of First Crush Winery is under the proud direction of Frank D. Puzio, a Harwich, MA eye doctor with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Aside from a rewarding day job, Dr. Frank has been evolving his enology experiences and skills for more than 30 years. First Crush Winery's mission is simple; to produce exquisite wines that will turn the heads of the most discriminating, utilizing the finest fruit in the land while sparing no expense on equipment and technology.

The name First Crush is a play on words depicting the realities of making wine, along with the social enjoyment experienced consuming wine. The first step in making wine is a process called “the crush” that strips the grapes from their stems to yield only berries and juice in preparation for fermentation. In addition, when wine is enjoyed, it is typically in the presence of friends, family, or with a person in your life that elicits a meaningful crush. And so, First Crush Winery came to be!

Friday Night Flights
Each Friday evening from 6:30-8PM, GrandTen opens the distillery doors to those interested in a more in-depth understanding of handcrafted spirits. They offer a detailed tour, followed by a relaxed tasting of their full line of products (along with special, limited-run spirits not available anywhere else). These tastings include discussions on mixology, the history of Boston spirits, and the spirit world more generally.

GrandTen Distilling was started because owners Matthew Nuernberger and Spencer McMinn love spirits and, just like you, enjoy a nice drink at the end of the day. Their mission is to create distinctive products that will satisfy you, the growing number of savvy New England cocktail drinkers. GrandTen is inspired by new and interesting flavors, but also take pride in producing high quality classic spirits. Their flagship product, Wire Works American Gin, celebrates the history of the famous South Boston iron foundry that occupied the space where they now distill.

All of GrandTen's products are produced in very small batches and distilled in copper. Every step, from choosing the raw ingredients to bottling and labeling, is done by hand.

Wine Down Fridays or Friday Night Flights? Choose wisely and devour the details of a perfect Valentine's Day with you better half. Cheers!

Wedding Wednesdays: How To Plan Your Honeymoon

The honeymoon is your hard-earned reward after months of wedding planning. But don’t forget, you have to plan that too. Here's The Knot's guide to organizing each piece of your trip at the right time (read: not at the last minute), so you have one less thing to stress over.

Image result for honeymoon

Six Months or More Ahead
  • Set a budget.
  • Start trading dream honeymoon destinations with your fiancé. Where do you want to go? What do you want to do? Start researching possible locations online, talk to a travel agent and poll friends for ideas.
  • Find a travel agent who specializes in your destination, activity (maybe sightseeing, hiking or diving) or mode of transportation (like a cruise specialist).
  • If the price tag on your ideal trip is out of your range, brainstorm ways to save money. Investigate what your frequent-flyer point balance can buy you and research honeymoon registry options like Honeyfund or Zola, which let your guests gift money toward your travels.
  • Research hotels, check room availability and reserve a room.
  • Book your tickets, get seat assignments, order special in-flight meals and check luggage allowances, especially if you're carting skis or scuba gear. If you hope to cash in frequent-flyer miles for a trip or upgrade, purchase or transfer points (if necessary) and make your ticket request from the airline as soon as possible.
  • Reserve a rental car.
  • If you're traveling abroad—and feeling ambitious—sign up for a foreign-language class or download a language app on iTunes and start practicing at home or on your way to work.
  • Ask your travel agent or visit the CDC Travelers' Health Site to check whether certain vaccinations are recommended or required before visiting your destination. (Some programs need to start months in advance of your trip.)
Three Months Ahead
  • Obtain your passports and visas, if necessary.
  • Consider signing up for travel insurance if one of the following apply: one of you has health issues; you're concerned about your safety; or the weather threatens to wreak havoc on your honeymoon (hurricane season, for example). Research travel insurance coverage offered by your credit cards, travel agent or an independent agency; secure additional coverage for your specific concerns if necessary.
Two Months Ahead
  • Buy a camera (if you don’t already have one and want higher quality photos than your phone will provide) and nice luggage—or register for them before your wedding shower. Practice using your camera to make sure it's working properly.
  • Research and book tours, theater tickets, hot restaurant seats and any other activities that require advance reservations—earlier if you're traveling during peak season—through your travel agent or soon-to-be hotel concierge (get their name and tip them when you arrive).
  • Get certified to scuba dive or begin lessons for any other activity you hope to pursue on your trip.
One Month Ahead
  • Make a packing and shopping list.
  • Reconfirm all reservations.
  • Make kennel reservations or contact your house, pet or babysitter to make sure they're available.
  • Exchange about $50 (or at least enough to get you to your hotel from the airport) into small bills in the currency of the country you'll be visiting. There is usually an exchange counter or ATM at the airport, but it can be nice to have cash in hand (it will also help you get used to the exchange rate).
Two Weeks Ahead
  • Pick up airline tickets and all applicable vouchers from your travel agent. Read all materials carefully to make sure the information is correct. If not, your travel agent can correct it.
One Week Ahead
  • Arrange to have mail held at the post office during your trip or have a neighbor pick it up.
  • Stop newspaper delivery.
  • Make two to three sets of photocopies of your passport, credit cards, insurance, wills—basically any paperwork people would need if your wallet were stolen or something happened to you (better safe than sorry). Give one set each to a parent and/or a relative or friend, pack one set in your luggage and leave one set in your safe at home.
  • Download any helpful travel, budget or guide apps (like Guides by Lonely Planet, Chefs Feed, Mint or Tripcase).
  • Ask stores where you've registered to hold orders so gifts don't pile up on your doorstep, or ask a relative to collect packages.
  • Set out clothes to pack and buy what you need.
  • Make sure you have extras of everything you can't live without: migraine tablets, allergy pills, asthma inhaler, glasses or contacts and so on. Carry all medications in their original prescription bottles to avoid questions at customs.
  • Touch base with your house, pet or babysitter to reconfirm when they'll be coming over, hand over the keys, give them a copy of the vet’s and/or pediatrician’s number and your contact info.
  • Call your cell phone carrier to get an international travel plan if you’re traveling abroad.
Three Days Ahead
  • Reconfirm overseas flights.
  • Order champagne to be waiting for you in your hotel room (okay, not a necessity, but a fun welcome).
  • Buy or download any books and magazines for the trip.
  • Confirm and sync all important contacts in your phone and any other devices you’re traveling with (in case something happens to your phone). Go a step further and keep a notebook with handwritten contacts, just in case. Transfer the addresses of friends to whom you'll want to send postcards plus important phone numbers (babysitter, doctor) into a little travel-sized notebook or journal.
  • Make arrangements for your rides to and from the airport.
  • Email or leave a copy of your itinerary and a set of house keys with a relative or close friend in case of an emergency.
  • Check weather forecasts for your destination (it may affect your packing list a bit).
  • Change your voicemail and set an email away message at work.
  • Prepare your house or apartment for your departure—eat or dispose of perishable food, water plants, set timers and security alarms, and turn off recurring clock alarms.
One Day Ahead
  • Reconfirm flights.
  • Make sure your luggage (carry-on and checked) is labeled both on the outside and inside with your name, hotel address and phone number.
Day Of
  • Get ready to have some fun!

Bumble Means Business

Bumble, the female-forward dating app where women make the first move, has been playing the field—at least when it comes to events.

As it continues to rebrand itself as a “social-connecting” app, by introducing features like Bumble Bizz and Bumble BFF, the tech tool, BizBash shares, is developing into a catch-all networking platform, where you might meet your new business partner, as well as your soulmate. With this shift in its product offerings, the brand’s event strategy has also expanded.

Currently, the app boasts 40 million users worldwide. Bumble owner Rimberg International Corp., a holding company that also controls the dating apps Chappy and Badoo, is even considering an initial public offering on the Nasdaq based on the growth potential of the app, whose users skew younger than those of competitor apps owned by Match.

And since the interests of the app’s users can range from dating to deal making, each Bumble event, which are typically free to users on a first-come, first-serve basis, needs to be tailored to a specific segment. For example, the app recently joined forces with HBO to host an experience called “Stay Home to the Movies” in August at a brownstone in Manhattan. Invited guests watched exclusive HBO content in a comfy home setting. This was hugely successful because the experience resonated with their core audience that consists of young, socially connected individuals that are always looking for new and exciting things to do.

For its business-focused users, the brand organizes panels that feature female leaders across various industries who share their success stories, learnings, and entrepreneurial journeys. These Bumble Bizz panels, which are held in cities around the country, attract professionals who are actively seeking to expand their networks, meet collaborators, and find their next career opportunity.

Recently, Bumble found a way to combine all these event efforts, thanks to a partnership with hospitality bigwig Ian Schrager and his Public Hotel in New York, where the brand hosted a series of events around its in-app modes, including a “Work Party” for freelancers and a “Make the First Move” cocktail party. Attendees included a mix of social media influencers, creative types, and local Bumble users. It was the first time the app teamed up with a New York hotel property.

The brand also holds a monthly dinner series called Bumble Gives Back, which is designed for single users to come together in real life in support of a cause. For each dinner, Bumble partners with a different philanthropic cause, as part of its #BumbleGivesBack initiative. Events have taken place in London and Sydney; the first New York iteration was held in September at the Public Hotel in partnership with Dress for Success, an international not-for-profit organization that empowers women with professional attire and development tools.

Whether it’s a charitable dinner or a social meetup or a business panel, Bumble events continue to strive toward one goal: to turn digital connections into offline experiences.

In 2018 in Los Angeles, Bumble debuted its Hive concept, a pop-up space that brings the brand to life and works as an extension of Bumble headquarters, which is located in Austin. Inside, visitors enjoyed complimentary entertainment, drinks and snacks, and interactive sessions with entrepreneurs and influencers. The pop-up was so popular it was extended from one month to three. Olson says that because of its success the company is exploring the idea of a permanent IRL space for its users.

Monday Mashups: Eventbrite Shares How to Use Event Apps to Set Your Brand Apart

In the digital age, both eventgoers and marketers have countless tools at their disposal. Attendees can find and buy tickets to events with a tap from their phones, while event marketers have countless options to connect with their customers digitally. But the best way to connect with brand fans on their phones—and stand out from your competitors? According to Eventbrite, it's by using the apps they love.

Guest Column: How to Use Event Apps to Set Your Brand Apart

To get eventgoers to actually click “buy,” event marketers try to make the purchase process easy. You can't ask people to leave Facebook to buy a ticket when competitors have a one-click buying process. Digital marketers trying to connect with their target audience also try to simplify the conversion process by targeting customers on their own terms.

Customers want a convenient and straightforward purchasing process. The easy solution to all this is to reach your audience and let them buy tickets on the apps they love. Here are some ways to use the top social media apps to stand out from the competition:

1. Facebook: Segment your market.
For event organizers trying to leverage an app to their advantage, Facebook is the best because of its ubiquity. It’s populated by friends, family members, fans, and followers of all kinds of industries. Research by Eventbrite determined that customers are 80 percent likelier to buy a ticket via ad “retargeting” than conventional methods. With the Custom Audiences feature, people can be retargeted if they visited your Facebook page.

2. Spotify: Narrow in on music fans’ searches.
Like Facebook, Spotify is a go-to app in its industry that also connects its worldwide base of users to shows. But Spotify isn’t just a valuable resource for building playlists and checking out new releases. It can also connect artists to their most loyal fans.

Rather than just streaming music for some background noise, listeners can click on an artist's profile and see whether the act is touring nearby. This is how music enthusiasts discover that their favorite indie bands are playing nearby and alert their entourages.

Take advantage of Spotify's recent playlist targeting feature to home in on individuals using their music preferences and their key demographic information. Instead of sending mass promotional information to every music lover on the planet, you can narrow your focus to those interested in a particular artist or genre.

3. Instagram: Provide customers a one-click buying option.
If potential eventgoers visit your Instagram page, chances are good that they’re ready to buy. Simplify the customer experience by putting an easy-to-access “buy” button on your Instagram profile.

Instagram users already have an interest in the pages and influencers they follow, so your team will already be dealing with an engaged and interested audience. An easy-to-use purchasing button simplifies the customer experience and can cultivate a happier and more agreeable audience for your staff to target. Integrating a “buy” button on Instagram also allows your team to track sales and gain information that will help attract new and returning customers.

It can take years to develop a creative and captivating marketing strategy, but winning over your customers is far simpler than that. In the digital marketing world, it's about making things as simple as possible. Engaging your fan base through an app is just the way to do that.

By effectively using a variety of popular apps, you can ensure both your current customers and new prospects come flocking to your next event. Don't wait, devour the details of some buying power with these helpful tips from Eventbrite today!

Very Hungry for Valentine's Day

On February 14, Tuscan Kitchen in the Seaport District will welcome San Valentino to their Boston home with a celebration of artisan Italian cuisine and Romeo & Juliet-inspired cocktails laced with love. How romantic?!

Available on Valentine’s evening, chefs Joe Brenner and Nimesh Maharjan have masterfully created seven a la carte additions that showcase the best regional cuisine inspired by Italy’s rich lands and seas. For antipasti courses, there is Carpaccio di Manzo with crispy capers, mache, winter truffles and Parmigiano Reggiano ($17); Zuppa di Zucca with compressed apples, toasted seeds, croutons and maple mascarpone ($14); and, Wild Mushroom Tart with fonduta, arugula, poached egg and tartufo ($19). For secondi options, they are threefold: Agnello alla Griglia with grilled lamb chops, carrot puree, olives, artichoke and fennel jus ($48); Pesce Spada with seared swordfish, Tuscan white beans, smoked pancetta and roasted pepper agrodolce ($45); and, Surf & Turf, an 8oz filet mignon, lobster tail, mascarpone-whipped potatoes, cipollini onions and demi ($65). The dolce per due is Chocolate Torte, Chocolate Mousse, Strawberries ($22; serves two people). Our mouth is already watering!

To complement the culinary features, beverage manager Jose Luis Betancur is taking a page from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet to showcase twists on classic cocktails inspired by traditional ingredients found in Verona – the city in northern Italy’s Veneto region featured in Shakespeare’s book of romance – in addition to pouring a pair of champagne offerings. The Romeo is crafted with Bulleit bourbon, housemade maple-fig simple syrup and orange bitters ($16) while the Juliet is a sparkling mix of Grey Goose L’Orange, Aperol, St-Germain and prosecco ($16). For champagne-lovers, available by the glass and bottle there is Ferrari Brut ($15; $70) and Moët & Chandon ($25; $100). Cheers to that!

And in case you didn't know, Tuscan Brands, founded by serial food entrepreneur Joe Faro, is the culmination of two generations sharing authentic artisan Italian cooking experiences. As a result of Faro’s upbringing in an Italian immigrant family where cooking was a time-honored tradition, his success creating Italian cuisine and products and his travels all over Italy, Tuscan Kitchen opened in Salem, NH, in 2010 as a destination for diners to eat and drink their way through the Old World’s diverse regional scratch cuisine: rustic breads, handmade scratch pastas, hand-stretched mozzarella, house-cured salumi and a full array of Italian pastries, cookies and homemade gelatos, all set against the backdrop of a masterfully-curated Italian wine selection. Tuscan Market in Salem followed in 2012 as a reimagined Italian marketplace to shop for freshly baked breads, handmade pastas, pastries, and gelato, as well as Italian wines, prepared foods, butchered meats and rare imported Italian specialties. The Salem location also includes “La Scuola Culinaria,” an onsite cooking school. Tuscan Brands expanded to Burlington, MA, in 2014 with the opening of the second Tuscan Kitchen, while a third location was added in March of 2017 in Portsmouth, NH, which now includes an expansive marketplace. Tuscan Seaport’s 14,000 square foot restaurant opened in Boston’s Seaport Square development in November 2017.

Homemade Sour Strawberry Pop Rocks

Ingredients/Tools:
½ cup cassava/tapioca syrup or honey
2 cups granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
1 tsp baking soda
¼ cup citric acid
½ tsp strawberry extract (or any extract you prefer)
pink gel food coloring
candy thermometer*
hammer
*Having a working candy thermometer is key. If your temperature is off in any way, it could affect your end results!

Instructions:
1. Combine the syrup, granulated sugar, and water in a pot set over medium heat. Whisk just to combine at first, and then do not whisk again.

2. Let the mixture boil until it reaches 300 degrees.

3. Meanwhile, spray a baking sheet with cooking oil. Set aside.

4. Immediately take the pot off the heat and add in the baking soda, citric acid, strawberry extract, and a couple drops of food coloring. Whisk until everything is combined. (Work quickly, the candy will set very fast!)

5. Pour the candy onto the baking sheet tap against your work surface so the candy spreads evenly across the baking sheet.

6. Set aside to harden, about 20-40 minutes.

7. Once the candy has hardened, smash into smaller pieces with a (clean) hammer.

8. Place those pieces into a plastic bag and place that bag in between a kitchen towel. (The kitchen towel helps to not get holes in the plastic bag). Hammer away at the kitchen towel wrapped bag until you have tiny little crushed pop rocks!

BizBash's Guide to the Fyre Festival Documentaries

Have you watched yet? If you haven't by now, you really need to. Some shocking insights as to how Fyre Festival faced its certain doom. How did this catastrophic event even come to fruition? Tune in to find out but also read what BizBash has to say about the whole thing right here!

Co-created by wannabe entrepreneur and now-convicted felon Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule, was initially promoted as the next big music festival and pop culture event, à la Coachella. But social media revealed that the April 2017 event in the Bahamas was a disaster—attendees discovered half-finished disaster relief tents as lodging, flimsy cheese sandwiches instead of upscale catering, a no-show by every promised headliner and celebrity attendees, and subsequent lawsuits from the scammed attendees.

Hulu and Netflix both recently released original documentaries about the notorious event. Netflix released Fyre on January 18 and Hulu surprise-released Fyre Fraud on January 14. The Netflix film, directed by Chris Smith, and the Hulu film, directed by Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason, both delve into how the catastrophic festival came to be.

Both films feature interviews with involved parties that include event planners and festival promoters, McFarland's former employees, festival attendees, and social media experts. Interviewees discuss their experiences and involvement with the lead-up, the days during, and the aftermath of the event—as well as dealing with McFarland, who’s currently serving six years in prison for wire fraud. And both docs feature raw footage of what exactly unfolded on the island of Great Exuma, the festival site, along with pre- and post-festival meetings involving McFarland and his team.

So, which one should you watch? Well, if you’re interested in getting all of the fascinating, hilarious, and disturbing details, the answer is both. Here are some of the unique perspectives of each film according to BizBash.

Netflix's Fyre shows festival attendees dragging their luggage to disaster relief tents. They were initially promised luxury lodging.

To get on the ground: Netflix
Hulu’s doc spends a lot of time on the backstory of McFarland and his past ventures and has an overarching theme of the consequence of influencer culture. Fyre touches on those subjects as well, but the doc immediately takes viewers to the Bahamas with exclusive footage from a promotional shoot that involved supermodels including Bella Hadid and Chanel Iman—the infamous ad promoting paradise with swimming pigs was initially used to market the event. As the documentary continues, footage shows meetings with McFarland at Fyre Media headquarters. And for those truly looking for their fill of schadenfreude, Fyre features numerous clips from attendees, which show everything from the horror show that was the rush to claim a FEMA tent (initially billed as luxury lodging) to being locked in the local airport without food or water overnight.

To watch an exclusive interview: Hulu
One element Hulu’s Fyre Fraud has that Netflix’s doesn’t is an interview with McFarland himself. While the interview doesn’t necessarily provide anything revelatory, it does leave it up to the viewer to decide what type of person McFarland is—or the type of person he wants to be seen as.

To learn how planners didn’t stand a chance: Netflix
For those who want a detailed picture of the planning and the days leading up to the event, Fyre is the way to go. The doc features interviews with Andy King, the festival’s creative consultant, and Mark Musters, the festival’s creative director. The two organizers offer candid confessionals about important moments leading up to the doomed event—including the fact that planning should have begun at least a year before the date, not less than two months out. They also offer tidbits about the project's infeasible goals and some particularly shocking facts about the lengths some were willing to take for McFarland to make the festival happen.

For Influencer Culture 101: Hulu
People in their 20s and mid-30s who watched Fyre Fraud probably didn’t need some of the on-the-nose stock footage and cartoons that are included to illustrate millennial and influencer culture. But for those who do need a lesson on how Fyre Festival was essentially a byproduct of Gen Y culture and social media—most of the people involved in promoting and buying tickets were millennials—Hulu’s version presents a “millennial culture for beginners” class. Influencers who attended and promoted the event shed light on their experiences and what millennials crave, and interviews with journalists and social media experts also offer insight.

To get a local side of the story: Netflix
While Hulu’s film features an entertaining interview with one of the local bartenders, Netflix’s offers insight from multiple Bahamians who were unwittingly roped into the scam. The interviews provide humorous, shocking, and, at times, heartbreaking details about their experience helping set up the event and how it has affected them (and continues to do so).

To learn about McFarland's scamming origins and partnership with Ja Rule: Both
Both films focus on how McFarland started as an entrepreneur in New York; he founded Magnises, a members-only credit card company for wealthy millennials that offered benefits such as tickets to high-profile events (spoiler alert: these benefits didn't exist.) Along with covering his first venture, the two films also show how he came to partner with Ja Rule for Fyre Festival and touch on how the event was supposed to be a launching point for the Fyre app, a Tinder-esque swiping platform to book A-list performers at events.

To get the most objective take: Neither
While both films tackle the festival with a darkly humorous attitude, leaving almost no question untouched, both make questionable journalistic choices. Hulu paid McFarland to do the interview and failed to reveal the fee. And one of the producers of Netflix’s doc is Jerry Media, the company McFarland hired to promote the festival. Jerry Media employees are interviewed prominently, and at one point discuss how they were directed to delete negative Instagram comments from the festival’s account in the days leading up to the event.

To see the infamous cheese sandwich: Both
The star of both films arguably is the cheese sandwich—yes, that cheese sandwich. In both docs, interviewees recall the tweeted photo of two slices of American cheese on two slices of wheat bread, served with a small salad, which was served to hungry and distressed attendees. People interviewed in both films say that social media post is what truly turned the Fyre Festival into a viral, headline-making event for all the wrong reasons.
